📋 CMMC 101: The 4-Phase Roadmap Every Defense Contractor Needs to Understand

We’re in Phase 1. But Phase 2 is 8 months away — and it changes everything.

Here’s where we stand right now:

🔵 Phase 1 (Now – Nov 2026)

Level 1 and Level 2 SELF-assessments are now appearing in DoD contract language. You must affirm compliance in SPRS to remain eligible for new awards. No third-party required — yet.

🟡 Phase 2 (Nov 2026)

This is the big shift. Level 2 C3PAO (third-party) assessments become mandatory for contracts handling CUI. You can no longer self-attest your way through. A Certified Third-Party Assessment Organization has to verify your 110 NIST SP 800-171 controls.

🟠 Phase 3 (2027)

Level 3 requirements enter the picture — an additional 24 NIST SP 800-172 enhanced controls, assessed by DIBCAC. Mission-critical programs and advanced technology contracts are in scope.

🔴 Phase 4 (Nov 2028)

Full implementation. CMMC requirements mandatory in all applicable DoD contracts and subcontracts across the supply chain.

⚠️ The reality check:

Only 1% of DIB contractors are currently audit-ready.

C3PAO scheduling demand is already increasing.

CMMC compliance takes 6–12 months on average.

If you’re waiting for Phase 2 to start preparing — you’re already late.

The question isn’t IF your contracts will require certification. It’s whether you’ll be ready when they do.

PSY Logistics Technology Partners helps Houston-area Defense Industrial Base contractors navigate every phase of the CMMC journey — from gap assessment to certification readiness.
